Grade Calculator

Grade calculator (for courses and course sets)
At the end of the course a teacher often need to combine his/her own grades (from Blackboard or Excel) with the grades that he/she receive from Evaluation Service (from the Multiple Choice exam), so that he/she can send the right grades to the Education Centre. To do that, it’s helpful use ICTO’s ‘Cijfercalculator’ (Grade Calculator).

Experiences
Read the experiences from Stefan Schevelier and Reinald Minnaar in Faculty Matters of September 2017.

Do it yourself!
If you would like to use the Grade Calculator yourself, please contact Lies Verberk-de Jonge (ICTO) at icto@fm.ru.nl She is also happy to show you how to use the Grade Calculator, so that you will be able to use it for your grades right away!

The RU-programme ‘ICT in Education’ at our faculty

Digital testing
We have had a pilot at our faculty. To read the experiences from Daan Boezeman in Faculty Matters of July 2017.

Recording clips in the studio
For example: read the experiences from Joris Knoben and Jan Verhoeckx in Faculty Matters of March 2017.
Or read the experiences from Thomas Eimer who had his students create clips as an assignment, in Faculty Matters of April 2017.

Traintool
A tool to train communication skills, such as interviewing skills. Read the experiences from Huib Ernste, Marjolein van Eerd, and Maria Kaufmann in Faculty Matters of March 2017.

Weblectures
It is possible to record your lecture as a weblecture. Have a look at the RadboudNet page about weblectures (only in Dutch) to see how to have your lecture recorded and how to create the link to the weblecture in Blackboard.

Administration and education

Course dossiers
The new system to create an archive of the Course Dossiers of our faculty has been implemented in March 2017. At the moment the system is used by two departments. See Faculty Matters of March 2017 for an impression of the ‘Course Dossiers System’.

Course evaluations
At the moment course evaluations can be done ‘on paper’ or ‘online’. The ‘online’ version is done via Blackboard. Since Blackboard will be replaced by Brightspace, the faculty will need to look for an alternative. At the end of Block 2 there will be a pilot to do some course evaluations via the software Evalytics. Besides that the faculty will look at the tool that ‘Evaluation Service’ is planning to use for ‘online’ course evaluations, besides their ‘on paper’-evaluations.
The bachelor- and master-programmes are being evaluated via the online tool ‘Lime Survey’. This happens right after the student has filled in his/her online application form for his/her diploma.

Osiris and Blackboard
Some technical details on enrolments in Osiris and Blackboard. How does it work?
Students enrol for a course in Osiris. Overnight Osiris synchronises with Blackboard in such a way that all the students that are in a course in Osiris, will be in that course in Blackboard. And when a student is NOT in the course in Osiris, the student will be ‘set to unavailable’ for that course in Blackboard.
Teachers (u-numbers) will also be added by Osiris to Blackboard overnight, but they will not be removed from Blackboard by Osiris (this needs to be done manually). So when a teacher would like to be added to a course: ask the Education Centre to add your u-number in Osiris. And when a teacher would like to be removed from a course in Blackboard: ask the Education Centre to be removed from Osiris AND ask ‘ICT in Education’ to be removed from the course in Blackboard.
For an organisation in Blackboard: all enrolments are done manually by ICTO.

Application for diploma’s and certificates online
Since 2015/2016 all students from our faculty fill in their application for their diploma or certificate online. The application forms for all study programmes in Dutch are only in Dutch and the application forms for all study programmes in English are only in English.
After applying for the Bachelor or Master diploma the student will have the opportunity to fill in the Bachelor or Master evaluation.

The latest projects at our faculty, october 2017

All mathematics of curriculum in learning environment Sowiso
At the Economics department Jana Vyrastekova and Chris van Hooijdonk have been granted subsidies from the “RU Proeftuin”. They will use SOWISO (an online learning platform) to create a totally integrated research methods programme for the entire Bachelor’s programme; a complete overview of all the mathematics, statistics and methods included in the curriculum, which is easily accessible. See the interview in Faculty Matters June 2017.

Clips including conditional feedback
Rutger Schilpzand (Economics) has been granted the “RU proeftuin” last November and has created interactive video-clips to teach mathematics and to trigger the student to try to solve the problem himself, during the clip. To see these clips on YouTube: Clip Cobb-Douglas and Clip Cournot Duopolie

Feedback-tool
Peter Kruyen has created a feedback-tool combining the survey-tool LimeSurvey and the statistical software ‘R’ in such a way that the respondent of the survey recieves feedback right after filling in the survey. This increases the response-rate to the survey. See the interview in Faculty Matters June 2017.

Most frequently asked questions and topics at ICTO

Groups in Blackboard
‘Creating groups and working with groups in Blackboard’ is one of the most popular topics that teachers need help with at ICTO. The reason is that it can be very useful to create groups in Blackboard and to use “group tools” in a course, but it’s not very intuitive how to do this in Blackboard. Furthermore: teachers only need to “set up” these groups and group tools once a year, so it makes sense to use the expertise of the ICTO on this. ICTO can often help the teacher rather quickly, either via e-mail, phone or personal.

TurnItIn assignment in Blackboard
Another topic is: How to create a TurnItIn assignment for an “originality check” (plagiarism) and how to use this in combination with groups in Blackboard?
This is not so hard to do, but there are a few ‘extra options’ that sometimes need explanation. Depending on the situation a teacher might like to use a different ‘option’ than the standard option. For example: the submitted paper should not be added to the TurnItIn repository.

At the Faculty of Social Sciences the optional tool to “add a rubric” to your TurnItIn assignment – to make the assessment more transparant and more objective to assess – is used rather frequently. Interestingly this is not a tool that the teachers at our faculty show interest in.

Interactive slides; Shakespeak and Mentimeter
To use interactive slides in your presentation there are two tools available at the RU at the moment: Shakespeak and Mentimeter. Shakespeak is the “older” tool; it’s a plug-in in Powerpoint to add interactive slides in your Powerpoint Presentation. Mentimeter is the “newer” tool; it’s a more userfriendly tool to create such slides, but it’s not a plug-in in Powerpoint, so you will need to switch from your Powerpoint presentation to the internet to use these slides.

Both tools can be used for more interaction with your audience during your presentation. It also works well to see if there are any more questions or to evaluate or for a short ‘formative test’ (to quickly see if the students have understood the content).
More information in Faculty Matters June 2017
For example: Experience of using Shakespeak by Hans Lekkerkerk Faculty Matters February 2017: http://www.radboudnet.nl/nsm/faculty-tters-0/archive/@1077212/lecturers-share-their-icto-experiences/

Peer feedback
More and more teachers are interested in tools for ‘peer feedback’. The ‘TurnItIn peer assignment’ is only working in a few situations! Don’t use this tool if you haven’t used it before! ICTO doesn’t support this tool any more, because it doesn’t deliver as expected.
When you would like to do ‘peer feedback’ via Blackboard; ICTO recommends to use the ‘discussion board’ in combination with ‘groups’.
In the meantime the RU programme ‘ICT in Education’ is looking for a new tool to facilitate peer feedback.

Preparing for the relocation to the Gymnasion: ‘Interactive screen’ and ‘collaborative learning rooms’

Relocation: new equipment
At the end of this year, we are relocating and new equipment will be available in the teaching areas in the Gymnasion. In some rooms, interactive screens will be installed. Two ‘collaborative learning’ rooms (using WeConnect) will also be created where groups of students can work together on computers.

Interactive screen work group
Sven Vrins (Education support) and Lies Verberk-de Jonge (ICT in Education) want to explore the educational and technical potential of the new equipment and software with teaching staff. To do so, the ‘Interactive screen’ work group has been created. The tutors currently taking part in this work group are: Peter Kruyen (Public Administration), Nanne Migchels (Business Administration, Marketing), Jana Vyrastekova (Economics and Business Economics, Economic Theory and Policy), Sascha Füllbrunn (Economics and Business Economics, Financial Economics) and Johan de Kruijf (Public Administration).

What do we want to be able to do?
In the months running up to the relocation, we want to find out what ‘our lecturers’ want to be able to do with the interactive screens and explore ‘good examples’ of ‘interactive screen’ use in education. Once we are in the Gymnasion, we want to be able to offer good support in the use of the interactive screens.

‘Pen-software’ and extra ‘tools’ in PowerPoint
The work group had a first training of the interactive screen: ‘Pen-software’ will be installed on the computers in the classrooms and extra ‘tools’ in PowerPoint (for the presentation-mode). In this way, the ‘touch-screen’ function will be enabled during a presentation. This software will also be available for your own laptop so that it can be used in combination with the ‘interactive screen’.

Available now in a number of classrooms (Erasmus building)
The following classrooms in the Erasmus building have already had ‘interactive screens’ installed such as the ones that will be placed in the Gymnasion: E2.08, E2.18, E3.01, E3.04, E3.05, E3.15, E3.18, E3.20, E2.70. Perhaps you would like to have a look some time to see how they work?

Ideas? Seen a good example?
Do you have time to brainstorm with us and are you interested in joining the work group? If so, contact ICTO. But we would also like to hear from you if you have ideas for using an interactive screen in your education programme or if you’ve seen a good example of ‘interactive screen use’! Then we can explore it further.

Brightspace is going to be the new LMS

Brightspace instead of Blackboard
In August, it was announced that Brightspace will become the new Learning Management System (LMS) at the Radboud University. Brightspace is a product that has been developed by the Canadian company Desire2Learn and it will be replacing Blackboard.

Pilots
From September until December, the Proof of Concept (POC) will take place in which a very precise investigation will be made of the links to other RU systems and how these are integrated. As of January 2018, different pilots will be taking place “from an educational practice point of view” in order to implement the system in the best way. If you are interested in running a pilot using Brightspace, you can contact one of the ICTO staff managers (icto@fm.ru.nl).

Implementation
The plan is that during the new academic year 2018/2019 Brightspace will be implemented in all education at the university. It is not sure yet whether all the faculties will go from using Blackboard to using Brightspace at the same time, or that this will happen ‘one at a time’.

RU-huisstijl voor cursussen 2016/2017 in Blackboard

Cursussen nieuwe studiejaar
